Since your problem was posted 11/28/2000 and it is 5/9/2001 now you probably have solved this problem. I read the problem and some of the follow up responses. From experience there is more to correcting overfilling a 650 savage engine. Because it is so small oil will go everywhere. It will appear to leak...but it really is dripping down the crankcase breather hose coming from the air filter box. When the engine is overfilled and run, oil will go through the carb into the air filter and deposit itself in LARGE quantities in the well in the bottom of the air filter box leaking down the hose and oxygen sensor under it. 1. To correct the problem remove the seat. 2.Access the air filter box. The air filter will be BLACK with oil (part of the reason the engine won't start is it cannot breathe.) 3.Remove the air filter. Feel around the inside of the air filter box. You will find oceans of oil in the bottom of the box. 4.Clean this out and replaced the air filter. 5.You will need to remove the gas tank and access the spark plug. 6.Remove it. The end will be BLACK. 7.Replace it with a new plug. 8.Put the gas tank and seat back. 9.Check the carb by loosening the float bowl drain screw SLOWLY. If you get gas out and not oil the carb should only need a light cleaning. 10.Pour 2ounces of a $4-$8 a bottle of carb/fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank. Fill the tank to mix the cleaner. 11.Drain the oil. 12.If you replace the oil ONLY, put in 2 quarts of a quality oil. If you change the oil and filter put in up to 2.5 quarts of a quality oil. 13Start the bike. 14.Ride in first gear ONLY for about 15 minutes. You will feel the power come back gradually as the cleaner cleans the carb. You will be riding in all gears shortly. I have done this and it works. It does take time. I needed a Clymer's manual, trial, and error for me. Best of luck to you.
